Sleepless nights ahead

It's time to pop open the bubbly, because it's congratulations to Monty, Edgar and my 3 new ram lambs. At 7am this morning, as the temperature read minus 7, my ewes were being scanned. After weeks of worry I was relieved to find that out of my 162 ewes only 2 were empty of lambs! 100 were scanned with twins, 25 triplets and 35 singles, which is a possible 310 lambs due in April. Now I need to feed the triplet bearers more than the twins, and the twins more than the singles to encourage equal size healthy lambs.

Replanting Hedgerows

Finally we've planted and guarded the last of the 1200 hedgerow plants that will fill in any gaps and re-establish any lost hedges. The plants are a mixture of Hawthorn, Blackthorn, and Hazel and will make an ideal habitat for nesting and feeding wild birds such as finches, tits, linnets, and hedge sparrows.

I've got you tagged!!

Around this time of year I tag the ears of my lambs. Although this is law, it's also helpful because it allows me to separate my males and females. The gimmers (female lambs) are kept away from the wethers (male lambs) and are now running on pasture alone to prepare them for breeding and to ensure their fleeces are in perfect condition. The wethers are given plenty of pellets before they have to go to the sheep farm in the sky. It's very sad to see them go but most farmers send their stock at three or four months old, whereas mine are already ten or eleven months old, they've been treated with lots of love and care. Awww!

New Foundations

The foundations of the new hemp storage barn have at last started. The barn measures 32m wide by 32m long, or 120 foot by 120 foot if you're as ancient as me. The space will allow me to house all the hemp bales I provide, plus all the bales other farmers grow for us. The concrete strips around the barn will make an ideal area to administer any medication, worm, shear, scan etc. to my sheep. I will update a photograph on the completion of the barn.

The Hemp Crop

Gary has harvested the hemp crop from 80 acres of farmland. This crop is now ready to enter the hemp processing plant. We are presently processing 5 tonnes a week and the plant will be operational throughout the Winter months. Next year our aim will be to double the out put which is ambitious but achievable....it's just that no-one's told the guys in the factory this yet....!

The Visitors Centre

The Visitors Centre/Showroom at the farm is now coming a long at break-neck speed. It will be completed in January upon which we shall be hosting a Grand Opening and all will be more than welcome. I daresay the odd beverage may also be supplied!
The Centre itself is an eco building. By this we mean our team of designers, builders and architects have tried to come up with the most innovative and 'green' designs possible and incorporated these into a stunning yet working building.
With features such as a wild flower and grass living roof, the mezzanine level, designer lighting and hemp insullated walls, we believe the end product will be a stunning piece of individual design meritted with state of the art features whilst incorporating building methods which stretch back centuries. The final build should blend into the landscape of the 17th century back-drop while promoting the endless possibilities of modern eco design.

Hempcrete

The Hempcrete blocks are a mix of Hemp and Lime. They are created by pouring the hemp/lime mix into 'shuttered' areas from the base of the walls moving upwards. Once the hempcrete is set, the shutters are moved up to the next layer where the process is repeated. Hempcrete has many wonderful qualities other than simply being 'green.' It is incredibly insullative and yet permeable therefore there is no damp nor condensation and the atmosphere within the buliding is pure and 'natural.'

The Wild Flower Field

The Summer days have welcomed the huge amount of butterflies and insects to these glorious pastures. There is a constant sound of buzzing while pollination takes place from sun rise to sun set. Literally millions of insects reside on these pastures creating their own micro world in which there lies a perfect balance of nature.

Hemp Reaches 7 Feet

Our hemp crop has benefitted hugely from Gary and Liams mid-night rain dancing. We have surpassed last years' growth already with still a month to go. It is a fantastic crop.

We spend a third of our lives in bed and getting a good nights sleep is important for health and wellbeing. Making fantastic beds is my passion in life, our ability to control this process makes this possible. That's why we grow our own fiber for carding in house at our factory in Leeds, we do not need to import our wool and this reduces our carbon footprint. All of the beds we make are hand built not mass produced and they are to customers specification with choices of firmness.
Harrison Spinks is a family business and I am proud to say I come from a line of bed obsessed individuals that enjoy nothing more than building the best beds possible, naturally.
Sleep well.
